Harwich Museum

November Newsletter

Welcome to November everyone.

The clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in so hopefully let us bring you some Autumn cheer.

In October/early November we had presentations by our Museum volunteers on ‘Customs Men vs Packets Boat Captains’ (Ros Weaver) and ‘Haunted Harwich’ (Helen Broom & Ros Weaver) held on Halloween day. Phillip Cunningham presented his popular illustrated talk on ‘The Story of the Harwich Turnpike Road’ and two talks on ‘The Manningtree Witch Hunt’. A big thank you to all our speakers. All talks were fully booked and we had healthy waiting lists for each one so apologies if you couldn’t get a space.

We hosted four groups of Shanty Singers over two days as well as a presentation on Kindertransport by David Whittle as part on the Harwich International Shanty Festival during October. Both days were really busy and well supported at the Museum so thank you if you came along.

Now to this month and beyond:

The next monthly quiz night takes place on Thursday 14th November at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm) at the United Services Club. Please do come along and join us, it’s very light hearted but also a chance to put your knowledge to the test. Just £2 per person and you can have up to 6 in a team. You may also win a raffle prize.

On Thursday 21st November at 11.00am we have a presentation on HMS Gipsy by David Whittle – the 85h anniversary of its sinking outside Harwich Harbour. **SOLD OUT**

Saturday 30th November starting at 10.00am through to 3.00pm our Christmas Craft Fayre takes place at Oakland Road Church, Dovercourt. Father Christmas and Mrs Claus’ will be flying in on their sleigh to join us from 11.00am.

We still have a few of our new limited edition 2025 calendar with a theme of ‘Through The Shop Window’ (cover attached) on sale for £7.95, an ideal Christmas present.

Again with Christmas in mind, on Friday 6th to Sunday 8th December certain items within our museum shop will be discounted by 10%. (access to the shop does not require paid entry to the museum).

Finally, just to say our last day of opening this year is Sunday 8th December before our winter break, so please visit us before then if you can for a look round before changes are made for next year plus you can partake in some light refreshments in our popular Lighthouse Tea Bar.

*The Events page on the website and social media are regularly updated so please check for details.

Tickets for all talks can be booked by emailing groupbookings@harwichmuseum.co.uk

Where talks are shown as **SOLD OUT** we do operate a waiting list so please enquire if you are interested in attending.

All talks generally last a hour with time for questions. For all talks please remember to pay in advance (includes entry to the museum) or if a season ticket holder to bring your season ticket to show at reception and let us know in good time if you cannot attend so we may be able to reallocate your place to someone else.

Just a reminder that we do have a tea bar and shop, entry is not required to the museum to use these. Outside seating is also available.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you soon.
