Roman Life on the Stour Estuary

When the Romans arrived in the Tendring Peninsula, they found large Iron Age communities working in salt production along the estuary from Great Oakley to Dovercourt.

The Romans took over the salt works and ruled as overlords for four hundred years.

The farmers and artisans of the Tendring Peninsula served their needs and the needs of Camulodunum — Rome’s very first city in Britain and the heart of the colony, just twenty minutes away.
