Harwich Museum

Evacuation day 1940

Here are some of the 300+ Harwich County High School pupils waiting to begin their evacuation from Dovercourt Railway Station to Gloucestershire on 2nd June 1940.

These happy faces are about to embark on their big ‘adventure’, together with 60% of all children from the borough of Harwich.

A team at Harwich Museum are compiling memories, photos and artefacts from this day as we are going to commemorate that day 85 years ago that the children left town.

Please contact us if you know of an ex evacuee who would love to tell us their story.

We have had a wonderful response to our appeal so far.
