Dear all
Welcome to our last newsletter of the year and what a year it has been.
We have had lots of visitors to both the museum and tea room, held plenty of well attended presentations plus the odd event and had many group and school visits in the last 10 months. We have dealt with numerous enquiries relating to all kinds of matters from local people who currently or previously lived in the area, their families and researchers. We never tire of educating all our visitors about our proud history and heritage, it’s our passion.
In November we had our last presentation of the year on HMS Gipsy on the 85th anniversary of its sinking outside Harwich Harbour, again another well attended day.
Last Saturday saw our successful Christmas Craft Fayre take place at Central Church, Dovercourt. Father Christmas and Mrs Claus’ flew in on their sleigh as well to see the children. We hear a good time was had by all.
The next monthly quiz night takes place on Thursday 12th December at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm) at the United Services Club. Please do come along and join us, it’s very light hearted but also a chance to put your knowledge to the test. Just £2 per person and you can have up to 6 in a team. You may also win a raffle prize.
Our last day of opening this year is Sunday 8th December before our winter break, so please visit us before then if you can for a look round before changes are made for next year plus you can partake in some light refreshments in our popular Lighthouse Tea Bar.
Thinking of Christmas as we do, on Friday 6th to Sunday 8th December selected items within our museum shop will be discounted by up to 20%. (access to the shop does not require paid entry to the museum). There is lots to choose from but why not treat someone to one of our limited edition 2025 calendars with a theme of ‘Through The Shop Window’ for £7.95 or a full set of Harwich Little Pub Books for £18.00.
Although the Museum will be closed to visitors for the winter break we will be taking the opportunity and working hard on some new displays, we are also currently putting together a programme of interesting presentation talks for next year. Details of which will all be revealed, along with which next year’s confirmation of opening times, in the next newsletter around the start of February.
Have you ever thought of volunteering, if you like interacting with the public, are a team player and have a love for local history the Museum could be for you. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, learn a new skill and make new friends. We have roles available in the tea room, galleries and reception. If you are interested or know someone who might be in joining our enthusiastic team please contact us for a discussion.
Over the winter break ‘The Events’ page on the website and social media will be regularly updated so please check for any updates.
A big thank you to all our visitors, friends and volunteers for all your ongoing support. We would not be here without you.
Finally, however you are celebrating we would like to wish you all a happy festive break and a wonderful New Year and we look forward to seeing you soon.
