The Harwich Branch

The Harwich Branch after Electrification in 1986

This talk follows on from my earlier talk at the museum, which showed the history of the line from opening in 1854 until electrification in 1986. We’ll now look at what happened after this major investment. It is an unfortunate story because of the subsequent major decline in rail freight traffic which resulted from significant changes in shipping services at both Harwich and Parkeston. Passenger services were less affected, although the cessation of locomotive-hauled boat trains marked a downgrading of these trains.
On the plus side a number of special excursion trains have visited the branch and many of these will be covered in the talk.
