Illustrated Talk by David Whittle
It all started at Harwich. The Cobbold family, once farmers and maltsters became brewers in the early 18th Century and by the 19th Century it had made them very rich and powerful.
The Harwich Brewery was founded by Thomas Cobbold in 1723 but found a problem with the local water supply, salt water seeped into the town wells, making them unsuitable for brewing. Water was brought down the river from the family owned springs at Ipswich, until finally, in 1746, the whole operation was moved there.
